Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Oysterbay, hosted a solemn Requiem Mass in honor of the late His Eminence Polycarp Cardinal Pengo, Archbishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam, who passed away on February 19, 2026, while receiving treatment at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI).
The Eucharistic celebration brought together clergy, religious, and faithful from various parts of the city, united in prayer and thanksgiving for the life and service of a shepherd who dedicated his life to the Church in Tanzania.

Among the distinguished faithful in attendance was Mama Maria Nyerere, widow of the Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere. She joined the parish community in prayer and reverence, participating in the Holy Eucharist and offering her respects in solidarity with the Catholic faithful and the nation at large.
Following the Mass, Mama Maria Nyerere greeted the Parish Priest of St. Peter’s Catholic Church Oysterbay, Fr. Bartholomeo Mrosso, expressing gratitude for the spiritual gathering and the opportunity to honor the late Cardinal’s legacy.
